The Best Part of Me...... Opinion Writing

This is one of my favorite ideas for opinion writing (besides taste testing Oreos!).  I found it while searching Pinterest for opinion writing ideas.  My class really enjoyed reading poems written by students from Durham, North Carolina.  Great inspiration for opinion writing!

Narrative Writing Resources

A great way to start:

Narrative Writing Graphic Organizers

Narrative Prompts by Angelica Sandoval that your students will really enjoy:
(I let my students choose between two narrative prompts.)
    Link

A prompt second graders love to talk about:  "A Time I Got Hurt"
- Good for teaching sequential order
- Be sure to add a fun Band-Aid!

Important Book Writing Activity - I like how this writing activity has a link to literature.  You will need The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown.  Students interview a friend and write a paragraph about them.  Just like the book, they include the most important thing about their friend.

A hilarious and exuberant retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, in which a brave, little red pencil finds her way through the many perils of writing a story, faces a ravenous pencil sharpener (the Wolf 3000)... and saves the day.

Writing

Focus Sticks .... to help with editing and revising

From : Make, Take and Teach

Step 1) Eat a lot of Pringles.

Step 2)  Cover with scrapbook paper.  (This one is from Michael's.)

Step 3)  Decide which icons you want on the focus sticks.

Another writing resource that is worth making is a writing mini office.  These two sites have a lot of great downloads.

Class Shared Class Journal
What a great idea!  I know my students will enjoy using these during Daily 5.  When not in use, students can read the journals during Read to Self or Read to Someone.

If Maggie could write, she'd probably write that one of her favorite places is a comfortable bed!

If Sam could write and had a good memory, he might write about how it was nice that he was adopted on July 4th five years ago!  He might also write how he appreciates that his name changed from Romeo to Sam.  (in honor of Uncle Sam!)

Flat Stanley and Snail Mail Pen Pals

I have enjoyed doing this project almost every year with my students.  It's a great way to integrate writing, reading and geography.

Flat Stanley is a young boy who is accidentally flattened when a bulletin board falls on him while he is asleep. Stanley is very, very flat but otherwise fine. Stanley’s family did not have enough money to send him on a train or plane to visit a friend in California, so they decided to fold him up and put him in a large envelope and mail him. Our class will do the same with our “Flat Stanleys.”

Stanley's trip to Africa - Click here to see my trip to Africa with Stanley.  I am so excited that he will be going with me to a NCCAT seminar at Ocracoke very soon! I am sure we will both learn and see a lot :).

If you're looking for another letter writing project....

Snail Mail Pen Pals   -  My goal is for each student to write to one other student in a different state once a month. We go through the entire writing process before letters are mailed.  They get very excited when mail comes!  This year we will be writing to another second grade class in Iowa.

Happy Thought Rocks - Journal Writing Idea

This is an idea I found on Laura Candler's website (look on her Odds N Ends page).   I am hoping these little guys will inspire some positive thinking and writing!  This idea is similar to a gratitude journal.  Rocks are fed by writing positive thoughts in a journal.
